| Judo was created in Japan by Dr. Jigoro Kano in 1882. Dr. Kano was a university professor and a lifelong student of the martial arts. He studied several different styles of JuJitsu with prominent masters of the time and created Judo based on these studies. Judo, which means the way of gentleness or suppleness, is a system of highly effective throwing, pinning, choking, and joint- locking techniques. Judo is more than simply a means of fighting however. Judo students strive to live up to the two main ideals that Kano set forth, "Mutual Welfare" and "Maximum Efficiency" Kano felt very strongly that Judo, when practiced correctly, could have enormous benefits for individuals, both physically and mentally. Judo is the most widely practiced martial art in the world and the second most practiced sport after soccer. Judo is also an internationally recognized Olympic event. Our school participates in local and regional Judo tournaments but tournament involvement is optional, not required. At our school we strive to be true to the ideals set forth by Dr. Kano. Our classes are open to anyone who wishes to learn in a safe, cooperative, non-threatening environment. We stress teamwork and the development of each student as a well-rounded Judoka, not just as a tournament competitor. A typical Judo class begins with a warm-up period followed by practice in proper falling and rolling techniques. After this, students practice the various techniques of Judo which include both standing and ground fighting applications. After gaining adequate experience students will be allowed to take part in supervised randori or free sparring. Judo can be a very challenging and rewarding undertaking.
